As the Leader of Transformation, Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) envisions becoming a green campus that promotes sustainability across education, research, and community initiatives. Situated in Bestari Jaya, UNISEL benefits from a rich natural environment, surrounded by biodiversity, greenery, and beautiful lakes, making it an ideal setting to champion sustainable practices. UNISEL is also fully aligned with the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Among the university’s flagship initiatives is the development of the Bird Sanctuary Lakes, which serves as a space for both recreation and environmental education. In the academic setting, sustainability is embedded into compulsory General Studies courses under the U4 component, including Green Awareness in Sustainability for Community and Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle. These courses aim to foster awareness and practical sustainability habits among students. Academic staff are also encouraged to conduct learning sessions outdoors to create deeper engagement with nature, while sustainability is included as a key element in course learning outcomes.
In terms of research, UNISEL supports sustainability through its dedicated centres of excellence and the active involvement of lecturers in projects such as bioremediation for wastewater treatment and sustainable practices in freshwater fish farming, including eco-friendly approaches to cultivating catfish.
These efforts are reflected in UNISEL’s participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, an international ranking system that evaluates universities based on their environmental sustainability performance. UNISEL’s inclusion and progress in this ranking showcase the university’s continuous commitment to green practices, responsible campus management, and sustainable development goals. It also serves as a benchmark for improvement and a motivation to further strengthen sustainability culture across all levels of the institution.
